Since 1999, I have been writing a series of articles for the Index-Journal in Greenwood, South Carolina.  These articles (over 165) have addressed timely issues of local and national concern.  I organized these articles under five categories or what I call the Five Steps to Community Improvement.

These five steps constitute a paradigm that considers all of the systems that have to work together in order to bring about positive changes in our families and in our communities.  Upon the urging of colleagues, friends, and readers, I have decided to revise and compile these articles into a single volume that focuses on how we can foster good citizenship (in the broadest sense of that term).

Praise for My Children’s Children

Bob Saul began his pediatric training with us at Duke and from those initial years onward has unceasingly demonstrated his lifelong passion for children and their families. The principles of the Five Steps to Community Improvement exemplify his commitment to exploit the experiences of his life and pediatric career to advocate tangible ways for parents to raise their children with the goal of outstanding citizenship. MY CHILDREN’S CHILDREN provides a unique and hopefully lasting approach to both parenting and community involvement.

MY CHILDREN’S CHILDREN demonstrates Dr. Saul’s commitment to improving the health of all children, especially those at high risk for various problems. I am impressed by his commitment to make a real difference in the lives of children and the communities of South Carolina and beyond. He recognizes the multiple factors that contribute to the health and well being of children and their families. This book makes substantial contributions toward promoting an holistic approach to childhood education and should have a lasting impact in future community improvement efforts. It gives us a clear road map for raising good citizens—a great need in our country today.
