Children are as important as “the men” put forth in the Declaration. Their health and well-being in the early years are the path to their unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

The roles of mentor, mobilizer, mediator, monitor and motivator are not restricted to those of us entering our later years. As a pediatrician, I would bless the five Ms as roles for parents to aim for also.

Our children, easily seen, can be difficult to interpret as we peer through the windows of their lives. Our presence in their lives is critical to their development and nurturing.
